WHY?

Speech and language disorders impact everyday life. I strive to use child-led play, natural opportunities, and motivating interests to make everyday communication easier.

WHAT CAN BE TARGETED?

Speech Sound Disorders

By age 3, unfamiliar listeners should understand more than 75% of what your child says. Children with speech-sound disorders may be misunderstood due to omitting, substituting, distorting, or adding sounds within their everyday speech.

Language Disorders

How well is your child following directions, learning new concepts, using and combining words, and expressing clear thoughts? Those with receptive and expressive language disorders have difficulty comprehending oral language and/or using words effectively to convey an intended message. Language disorders can begin around 18 months and be present through all ages.

Social Communication

Social communication (pragmatic language) encompasses skills needed to make and maintain friendships and other relationships through learning and recognizing different play schemes, body language, emotions, non-literal language, and perspectives.

AAC

Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) describes means of communicating that is not speaking verbally. These may include low-tech and high-tech options. Low-tech options include picture boards, core boards, alphabet boards, communication books, and picture exchange systems. High-tech options include speech-generating devices that produce verbal output. These may include tablets, eye gaze devices, apps, overlays, buttons, and computers. Trialing a variety of devices is necessary to determine the most effective fit for your child.

Literacy

Language-based reading difficulties, like dyslexia, can impact a student’s ability to read and write effectively. Students may exhibit difficulty reading new words, difficulty spelling, labored reading, mis-matched verbal and written expression, or below grade-level skills in one or both areas.

Stuttering

Fluency disorders include disruptions in the natural flow of speech. Stuttering-like disfluencies include repetition of parts of words (m-m-m-mom) (ma ma ma mom), prolongations of sounds (mmmmom), or blocking of sounds that may be described as getting “stuck” (mom *pause* I want the ball).
